an analysis of students’ ability in writing descriptive text at smkn 1 pekanbaru
The research entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Ability in Writing
Descriptive Text at SMKN 1 Pekanbaru” by Reza Silviawati aimed to analyze
the writing skills of tenth-grade students in composing descriptive texts in
English. The study was motivated by the increasing importance of English as
a global language and Indonesia’s low ranking in the English Proficiency
Index (EPI) in 2023. Among the four core language skills: reading, listening,
speaking, and writing, this study focused on writing, specifically descriptive
writing, due to its complexity for second-language learners.
The research applied a quantitative descriptive design. The
population involved all tenth-grade students of SMKN 1 Pekanbaru, while the
sample was drawn using cluster sampling from the hospitality department.
Data were collected through a writing test where students were instructed to
write a descriptive text. The texts were assessed by three raters using Brown’s
(2007) rubric, evaluating five aspects: content, organization, grammar,
vocabulary, and mechanics.
The findings revealed that 6 students (19%) were in the excellent
category, 13 students (42%) were in the very good category, 8 students (26%)
were categorized as good, 1 student (3%) was average, and 3 students (10%)
were poor. The average overall score was 75.9, indicating a general
classification of “very good.”
In terms of writing aspects, the strongest areas among students were
content and organization. Students demonstrated the ability to develop ideas
and structure their texts well. However, they faced challenges in grammar and
mechanics, particularly in the correct use of punctuation, spelling, and
capitalization. These weaknesses often affected the clarity and coherence of
the texts.
The study concluded that while students at SMKN 1 Pekanbaru had
strong potential in writing descriptive texts, there remained a need for more
vi
emphasis on grammatical accuracy and writing mechanics. The researcher
recommended that English teachers provide more targeted instruction on
grammar and mechanics. This study was also expected to serve as a reference
for further research and a resource for students, teachers, and parents in
evaluating writing skills.
