This research is titled “Correlation between Interest in Japanese and Knowledge about Japan of Japanese Language Education Students of FETT Riau University”. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant relationship between students' level of interest in Japanese and their knowledge about Japan.
This study used quantitative methods with a correlational approach. The population in this study were students of class 2023 of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, FETT, Riau University, totaling 29 people. The instruments used consisted of an interest questionnaire using a Likert scale and a multiple-choice knowledge test covering aspects of Japanese culture, history, geography, language-literature, and arts and entertainment.
The results showed that students' level of interest in Japanese was in the high category, while knowledge about Japan was mostly in the low category. Data analysis using Pearson correlation showed a positive relationship between the two variables with a correlation coefficient of 0.325. However, the significance value of 0.086 indicates that the relationship is not statistically significant at the 95% confidence level.
The conclusion of this study is that there is a trend towards a positive relationship between interest in Japanese and knowledge about Japan, although it is not statistically significant. Therefore, it is suggested that the learning methods used can increasingly integrate aspects of Japanese culture to increase students' knowledge in line with their interests.
