Representasi budaya jawa melalui game a space for the unbound
The development of the global video game industry demonstrates that digital media function not only as entertainment but also as a medium of cultural representation capable of reaching transnational audiences. Amid the dominance of global popular culture, local games hold the potential to serve as a strategic space for affirming cultural identity. One significant example is A Space for the Unbound by Mojiken Studio, which portrays Javanese culture through its visuals, narratives, and interactivity. This phenomenon is noteworthy because it reveals how local cultural elements are negotiated within the framework of modern entertainment.
This study aims to analyze how Javanese culture is represented in the game A Space for the Unbound using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach at three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with visual and textual observations as the primary techniques. The data consist of Javanese cultural symbols, including traditional architecture, pos ronda (community guard post), Surjan and blangkon clothing, street food, keroncong music, and social rituals of Javanese society in the 1990s.
The findings indicate that at the denotative level, cultural symbols are presented literally in accordance with social reality, such as keroncong as folk music, pos ronda as a communal interaction space, and Kebo Bule as a sacred animal. At the connotative level, these symbols convey social and emotional meanings rooted in Javanese culture, such as keroncong representing collective nostalgia, street food reflecting the people’s economy, and pos ronda symbolizing solidarity and mutual cooperation. At the mythical level, the game constructs a collective narrative that Javanese culture is ancestral heritage rich in moral, spiritual, and social values, even though it is essentially an ideological construction passed down through generations. In conclusion, A Space for the Unbound functions not only as an interactive entertainment medium but also as a critical and effective vehicle of cultural representation. The game demonstrates how local cultural symbols can be preserved and promoted within the dynamics of globalization, while simultaneously reinforcing cultural identity, evoking nostalgia, and sustaining the existence of Javanese culture in modern society.
