Komunikasi budaya pada tradisi famotu ono nihalö dalam adat pernikahan suku Nias di kabupaten Rokan Hilir
The Famotu Ono Nihalö tradition is an important part of Nias tribal wedding customs, embodying moral, spiritual, and social values. This tradition provides advice to the bride as preparation for marriage and serves as a means of cultural communication that strengthens identity and preserves ancestral values. In Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province, the Nias people, as a minority group, maintain this tradition despite living in a multi-ethnic environment. This study aims to determine the meaning of the Famotu Ono Nihalö tradition in influencing individual actions and participation in Nias society, to understand how social interactions shape and understand the symbolic meaning of the Famotu Ono Nihalö tradition in Nias society, and to determine how the Famotu Ono Nihalö tradition develops and is adapted through social interaction and cultural adaptation in Nias society in Rokan Hilir Regency.
This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach based on Herbert Blumer's Symbolic Interaction Theory. The research subjects consisted of traditional leaders, the bride's parents, and female guests involved in the ceremony. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Data validity was tested through extended participation, persistent observation, and triangulation.
The results of the study indicate that cultural communication in this tradition is conveyed through two forms: verbal communication in the form of advice in the Nias language, which is rich in moral values, and nonverbal communication through traditional symbols such as the giving of betel (afo), the spatial arrangement of the procession, and gestures of respect. The symbolic meanings include respect for women, affirmation of cultural identity, and strengthening social solidarity among Nias residents. Although the implementation has now been adapted to modern conditions such as time, cost, and heterogeneous social environments, this tradition remains preserved as a form of preserving ancestral cultural values. This research is expected to serve as an academic reference in the study of cultural communication and the preservation of local traditions amidst globalization.
