penerapan media pembelajaran virtual reality (vr) pada materi bumi dan tata surya untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar kognitif siswa kelas vii smpn 20 pekanbaru
Science education, particularly physics, plays an important role in shaping students' logical and scientific thinking patterns, especially in the 21st century, which demands technological mastery in the learning process. Technology in education functions to create an effective, interactive, and engaging learning environment, thereby enhancing students' motivation and understanding of the material being taught. One topic that is often considered difficult and abstract by students is the Earth and the solar system, due to its concepts that cannot be directly observed and the lack of adequate visualization.
Based on interviews with teachers and students at SMPN 20 Pekanbaru, many students stated that they had difficulty imagining the shapes and movements of planets and other celestial objects because of the lack of supporting images or media in the learning process. This has led to a lack of student interest and suboptimal learning outcomes. Therefore, in this study, the researcher intends to implement physics learning using Virtual Reality (VR) media to improve students' cognitive abilities on the topic of the Earth and the solar system.
The aim of this study is to determine students' cognitive learning outcomes through the application of Virtual Reality (VR) learning media on the topic of the Earth and the solar system, and to identify the differences in cognitive learning outcomes between students taught using VR and those taught using conventional methods.
The benefits of this research are expected to be multifaceted. For the researcher, it serves as a means of self-development and fulfills a graduation requirement. For educators, it offers an innovative alternative to traditional teaching methods, providing inspiration for more engaging and effective instruction. For students, the use of Virtual Reality media is expected to improve learning outcomes by offering clearer visualizations of abstract concepts. Furthermore, for schools, this research reflects the growing importance of integrating technology—especially Virtual Reality (VR)—into the educational process to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

This research was conducted at SMPN 20 Pekanbaru, Pekanbaru City, Riau Province. The type of research used was quasi-experimental with a posttest-only control group design. The population of this study consisted of Grade VII Phase D students, totaling 222 students. The sample involved 74 students, with class VII.3 (37 students) as the experimental class and class VII.4 (37 students) as the control class. Data were collected from posttest results in the form of cognitive ability tests after learning activities using Virtual Reality (VR) media on the topic of the Earth and the solar system. Data analysis was conducted after the data were collected, including both descriptive and inferential analysis.
The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the average cognitive ability score of the class taught using Virtual Reality (VR) was 80.38 (categorized as good), while the average score of the class taught using conventional methods was 73.18 (also categorized as good). The results of inferential analysis showed a significant difference between the cognitive abilities of students in the experimental and control classes. Although both classes were in the good category, the experimental class achieved significantly better outcomes than the control class.
Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the cognitive ability of students in the class taught using Virtual Reality (VR) media is better than that of students taught using conventional methods. Learning with Virtual Reality media can enhance the cognitive learning outcomes of students at SMPN 20 Pekanbaru on the topic of the Earth and the solar system.
