Physics, as an important part of science, aims to develop students' knowledge, understanding, and analytical skills of natural phenomena around them, but abstract concepts such as heat are often difficult to understand so that many students only memorize formulas without understanding the physical meaning. Based on an interview with one of the teachers at SMAN 7 Pekanbaru, it is known that students' concept understanding is low. This can happen because learning is still dominated by conventional methods and minimal visual media. The Auditory, Intellectually, Repetition (AIR) learning model which emphasizes material reception, intellectual processes, and repetition, combined with Powtoon interactive animation media can be the right combination to improve students' concept understanding.
The purpose of this study is to describe students' concept understanding on heat material with the implementation of AIR learning model assisted by Powtoon media and to determine the difference in students' concept understanding between the experimental class (applying AIR learning model assisted by Powtoon media) and the control class (applying AIR learning model without Powtoon media) on heat material.
This research was conducted at SMAN 7 Pekanbaru in even semester 2024/2025. This research used quasi experiment with posttest only control group design. The population in this study were all XI classes consisting of 8 classes. The research sample consists of, class XI.4 as an experimental class that applies the AIR model assisted by Powtoon media and class XI.3 as a control class that applies the AIR model without media assistance, both classes have been randomly selected after going through normality and homogeneity tests. The data collection method is by giving instruments in the form of multiple choice questions totaling 15 concept understanding test questions.
Students' concept understanding was analyzed based on three main indicators, namely translation, interpretation and extrapolation. The results showed that the experimental class experienced an increase in average achievement that was better than the control class in all three indicators. The use of Powtoon media in learning
helps students more easily understand heat material through interesting visual presentations and animations, thus significantly improving students' concept understanding.
Thus, based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the implementation of the Auditory, Intellectually, Repetition (AIR) learning model assisted by Powtoon media on heat material can improve the understanding of the concept of students in class XI SMAN 7 Pekanbaru with a very good category. To obtain maximum results in improving students' understanding of concepts, the role of the teacher becomes very important by choosing the right learning media and models, one of the alternatives that can be applied is the application of the Auditory, Intellectually, Repetition (AIR) learning model assisted by Powtoon media.
