ABSTRACT
Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) is an organic chemical compound (C18H30) in the form of a clear liquid used as a raw material for the manufacture of detergents, household cleaning products, agricultural herbicides, ink solvents, and the paint industry. LAB has replaced Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (ABS) as a detergent raw material due to its faster degradation rate, making it more environmentally friendly, as well as its superior cleaning effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and minimal impact on wastewater treatment systems. The Detal Process is the most economical LAB production technology currently available, and over 70% of the world's LAB is produced using UOP technology. In Indonesia, the demand for LAB continues to grow at a rate of 4,09% per year. However, domestic production capacity remains limited as there is only one LAB producer meeting national demand. The potential for developing the national LAB industry is vast due to the abundant availability of paraffin feedstock from domestic oil refineries. PT PRILAB Petrochem is a LAB plant using paraffin with UOP/CEPSA technology, which will be established in Mertasinga Village, North Cilacap, Cilacap Regency, Central Java, by 2028 with a production capacity of 42,000 tons per year.
The LAB production process, which uses paraffin as its main raw material consists of four stages, dehydrogenation of paraffin into olefins, hydrogenation of olefins into mono-olefins, alkylation with benzene, and separation and purification of the product. LAB, the main product with low volatility, is separated using a distillation column (T-103) as the top product, while HAB, the by-product, is separated at the bottom with a purity of 97%. The plant is designed using a heat exchanger network system (HEN) comprising 11 heat exchanger units. The plant's utility requirements are met by steam supply units, water supply units, and electricity supply units. The plant's equipment is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure smooth production processes. Production waste will be processed in a waste treatment unit to meet environmental standards.
The economic analysis shows that the Total Capital Investment (TCI) is Rp2.132.148.457.091. The Total Production Cost (TPC) is Rp1.936.687.304.734, and the Working Capital Investment (WCI) is Rp319.822.268.564. From the profitability analysis, the Net Present Value (NPV) was calculated to be Rp5.490.644.675.131 with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 21,15%, the Break-Even Point (BEP) occurring at a production capacity of 44,04%, and a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years. The results of the profitability analysis indicate that the LAB plant is feasible to establish and represents a profitable investment.
