Executive Summary Rancangan Pabrik Biodiesel Dari Waste Vegetable Oil Menggunakan Supercritical Methanol Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi Metanol (T-301)
ABSTRACT
Biodiesel is a sustainable fuel solution to address the scarcity of fossil fuels. It is produced from renewable resources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste cooking oil or Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO). Biodiesel derived from WVO is highly competitive as it utilizes waste, making it more economical and environmentally friendly compared to fossil-based fuels. A biodiesel plant utilizing WVO as feedstock is designed to address waste cooking oil management while meeting renewable energy demands. The plant has a production capacity of 90,000 tons per year and is located in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE), Gresik Regency, East Java.
The production process employs the transesterification method using supercritical methanol, which yields biodiesel as the main product and glycerol as a by-product. Supercritical methanol technology enables transesterification without the need for catalysts, resulting in shorter reaction times and higher conversion rates. The biodiesel plant's utility system includes an internal steam power plant with a power requirement of 6,378 kW. Fuel needs are met with 420 kg/hour of liquified natural gas (LNG) supplied by PT. Pertamina Gresik. Water requirements total 495,510 kg/hour, sourced from the Bengawan Solo River, while chilled water demand is 11,4 GJ/hour.
Economic analysis of the plant reveals a total capital investment (TCI) of IDR 1,610,034,931,949 and a total product cost (TPC) of IDR 1,652,996,830,188. Revenues from biodiesel and glycerol sales amount to IDR 2,824,028,268,917. Profitability analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of IDR 940.547.092.585, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 22,781%, a breakeven point (BEP) at 42% production capacity, and a payback period (PBP) of 3.12 years. These results indicate that the proposed biodiesel plant utilizing WVO with supercritical methanol technology is feasible and presents a profitable investment opportunity.
