Executive Summary Rancangan Pabrik Dimetil Eter Proses Direct Dari Gas Alam Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi Dme (T-201)
ABSTRACT
Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a simple ether compound used as a raw material in industry and as a fuel. DME is a colorless, odorless gas that is soluble in water and oil. It is non-carcinogenic, non-teratogenic, non-mutagenic, and non-toxic. It exhibits environmentally friendly properties because its combustion does not produce sulfuric acid (SOx) and smoke, and produces very low levels of NOx, CO, and particulate matter. Global demand for dimethyl ether in 2024 was reported to be 824,021 tons per year. In 2021, DME demand in Indonesia increased by 26,834 tons per year. This demonstrates the significant demand for DME by the Indonesian and global communities, leading to the construction of a factory with a production capacity of 30,000 tons per year. The factory is planned to be built in the Bontang industrial area, South Bontang District, Bontang City, East Kalimantan Province.
DME production requires natural gas as the raw material, which produces synthesis gas (CO2 and H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as a byproduct. Natural gas reacts with water vapor using a nickel aluminum oxide catalyst in a fixed-bed multitube reactor at 800ºC and 30 atm of pressure, with a reaction conversion of 93%. The resulting natural gas, synthesis gas, is further processed to produce DME using a bifunctional catalyst, CuO-ZnO-Al2O3, in a fixed-bed multitube reactor at 250ºC and 50 atm of pressure, with a reaction conversion of 95%. This process is designed using a distillation tower to achieve 99% dimethyl ether purity. The plant's utility facilities cover various essential needs, including an electricity supply unit, a steam supply unit, and a water supply unit. Waste generated from production will be processed in a waste processing unit. The production process at this plant will be monitored using process control instruments and safety instruments to ensure smooth production.
The Dimethyl ether plant has a fixed capital investment of Rp. 1,678,394,112,571, and a working capital investment of Rp. 251,759,116,886 and total production cost of Rp.1,896,873,320,717. The resulting product is sold with revenue of Rp. 2,442,330,112,104 per year. Profitability analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of Rp. 2,476,034,419,768 with a discount in the form of an internal rate of return (investor rate of return/IRR) of 20.15%, a break-even point (BEP) at a production capacity of 43.64%, and a payback period (PBP) of 3.3 years. Based on these results, the design of a dimethyl ether plant from natural gas is considered feasible to be established and is a profitable investment.
