ABSTRACT
The design of propylene oxide (PO) plant with a production capacity of 25,000 tons/year using the
main raw materials of methanol and hydrogen peroxide. The plant is planned to be built in North
Bontang District, Bontang City, East Kalimantan Province based on proximity to raw material
sources and supporting industrial facilities such as ports, distribution networks, and energy and
water supplies. The domestic PO demand of 22,225 tons/year has not been met by the national
industry, so the plant design is planned to meet the domestic market as well as exports to the
Southeast Asia region. In addition, the global trend towards environmentally friendly chemicals
also encourages the importance of building PO plants with cleaner and more efficient technology.
The technology used for PO production is through a combination of the UOP Methanol to Olefins
(MTO) and Hydrogen Peroxide to Propylene Oxide (HPPO) processes. The UOP MTO process
uses SAPO-34 catalyst in an FCC reactor to produce propylene from methanol, while the HPPO
process uses TS-1 catalyst in a fixed bed reactor to synthesize PO from propylene and H2O2. The
plant requires 3.23 MW of power, 155 tons/hour of steam, and 1,181.8 tons/hour of utility water.
The utility system includes a power generation unit with a steam turbine generator, cooling water
treatment system, boiler feed water, and domestic water. Waste gas in the form of CO2 produced is
still within the quality standard limits and can be disposed of directly, while liquid waste is
processed through physical, chemical, and biochemical stages in accordance with quality standards
before being discharged into the environment. The instrumentation used in the reactor is an S-type
thermocouple for manipulated control of the reactor input temperature variable because it has a
significant effect on the performance of the catalyst used.
Economic analysis shows the need for total capital investment (TCI) of Rp.1,397,007,706,367.67
per year and total production cost (TPC) of Rp. 1,098,786,192,505.87 per year with sales of Rp.
95,059,744.32 per year. Profitability analysis resulted in a payback period (PBP) value of 2.12
years, break-even point (BEP) at 40% production capacity, internal rate of return (IRR) of
21.47%, return of investment (ROI) of 26.33% and net present value (NPV) of RP.
156,447,731,347 per year at a discounted rate of 19%. Therefore, the establishment of a propylene
oxide plant with UOP MTO and HPPO technology in Bontang is feasible and promising and is
an attractive investment.
