makna tradisi mappettu ada dalam pernikahan adat bugis di kelurahan benteng kecamatan sungai batang kabupaten indragiri hilir
Village, Sungai Batang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency Advised by Noor Efni Salam and Dr. Nurjanah.
This study aims to explore the meaning of the Mappettu Ada tradition in Bugis traditional weddings practiced by the Bugis diaspora in Benteng Village. Mappettu Ada is a negotiation process between the families of the prospective bride and groom that involves discussions on sompa (dowry), dui mendre (wedding expenses), and the arrangement and timing of the wedding ceremony. The tradition is rich in cultural values, symbolic meanings, and social norms passed down through generations.
The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, combining phenomenological, hermeneutic, and ethnographic perspectives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques.
The findings show that Mappettu Ada holds profound symbolic meaning for the Bugis community. The sompa represents the groom’s commitment and responsibility, while dui mendre reflects respect for the bride’s family. The tradition also embodies key cultural values such as siri’ (dignity), lempu’ (honesty), and ade’ (customary law), reinforcing the cultural identity and social cohesion of the Bugis people, including those living in diaspora communities.
