representasi masalah sosial dalam film “agak laen” (analisis semiotika roland barthes)
This study aims to analyze the representation of social issues in the film Agak Laen using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach and Karl Marx’s social conflict theory. The film was selected for its success in portraying social realities—such as class inequality, the exercise of power, and the commodification of tragedy—within a distinct satirical comedy framework. The research addresses four questions: (1) What is the meaning of representation in Agak Laen? (2) What is the denotative meaning? (3) What is the connotative meaning? (4) What is the mythical meaning?
This research uses a qualitative descriptive method that combines social conflict theory—highlighting class tensions—and Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, which identifies three layers of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through interviews, observation of key Scenes, documentation, and literature study to support the interpretation of visual and narrative signs.
The findings indicate that: (1) Agak Laen represents class inequality in society. Through Marxist and semiotic analysis, the film illustrates how the upper class dominates while the lower class resists, often obscured by seemingly ordinary narratives; (2) On the denotative level, the film explicitly presents issues such as poverty, social disparity, crime, infidelity, and gratification, as seen in depictions of slum conditions, lifestyle gaps, and economic pressure that drive unlawful acts; (3) On the connotative level, it reveals symbolic meanings that deepen social critique, portraying these issues as reflections of alienation and structural inequality. The film invites viewers to reflect on social realities through deeper layers of meaning; (4) In terms of myth, the film exposes how collective meanings are shaped to justify inequality. Issues are often mythologized as individual failings rather than systemic problems, while dominant ideologies mask structural injustice through culturally accepted narratives.
