This research aims to analyze the practice of money politics that colored the implementation of the Pelalawan Regency Regional Head Election in 2020 and the factors that caused the practice of money politics. The theory used to analyze this phenomenon is the theory by Bumke (2021) which identifies money politics consisting of vote brokers, vote buying, and political corruption. To analyze the factors causing the occurrence of money politics using the development of rational choice theory and adjustments to the findings in the field. The location of this research is Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques conducted by interviews and document searches.
The results of the research obtained are that the practice of money politics that occurs involves vote brokers who become intermediaries giving money to voters by practicing vote buying to win votes so that political corruption occurs therein. The practice of money politics has been followed up by the Pelalawan Regency Bawaslu with 6 (six) alleged violations of money politics handled by the Pelalawan Regency Bawaslu, only 2 (two) cases were proven and processed criminally. due to the difficulty of obtaining evidence. Factors that cause the practice of money politics are patron-client relationships, low party-id, lack of political education, economy, culture, and low levels of public education. The most dominant factor is caused by economic factors. The practice of money politics that occurs has harmed the democratic process so that the democratic process that takes place is not in accordance with the principles of luberjurdil.
