Kegiatan Pemeriksaan Mayat Di Bidang Kedokteran Dan Kesehatan Kepolisian Daerah Riau Pada Masa Pandemi Covid-19 Periode 2020-2022
During the COVID-19 pandemic, post-mortem examinations required major procedural adjustments to ensure staff safety while maintaining the quality of forensic services. This mixed-methods study aimed to describe the characteristics of post-mortem cases handled at the Forensic Medicine and Health Division of the Riau Regional Police from 2020 to 2022, and to explore the experiences and challenges faced by forensic personnel.
A total of 387 cases were reviewed. Quantitative analysis showed that external examination was the most frequently performed procedure in both COVID-19 positive and negative cases. The most common injuries were abrasions (22.2%) and contusions (16.9%), while most cases showed no significant external trauma. Blunt force injury was the most frequent cause of death. Qualitative findings revealed several operational challenges, including limited protective equipment, psychological stress among personnel, restricted autopsy room capacity, and occasional refusal from families. Nevertheless, all procedures were conducted using level-3 PPE, universal precautions, and strict disinfection protocols.
Overall, the pandemic did not reduce the quality of Visum et Repertum or forensic diagnostic accuracy. Adaptation of standard operating procedures, workflow modifications, and disciplined infection-control measures enabled autopsies to continue safely and effectively throughout the pandemic period.
Keywords: autopsy, COVID-19, forensic medicine, police medical services, universal precaution.
