ABSTRACT
Wax deposition in oil pipelines poses a significant challenge in industry,
particularly in the oil and gas industry, as it can reduce production capacity and
efficiency, resulting in financial losses. To mitigate these losses, methods are
needed to detect and monitor wax deposits in pipelines. The method used in this
study is an ultrasonic testing method to detect the thickness distribution of wax
deposits in pipes by analyzing time domain signals (A-scan) based on ultrasonic
wave echoes (backwall echo). The deposit thickness data obtained from ultrasonic
signals is processed into 3-dimensional visuals. This study consisted of testing the
acoustic properties of PVC and wax materials, such as sound velocity and
attenuation. This was followed by testing to detect the thickness of wax deposits in
PVC pipes. Finally, mapping was performed on a straight pipe model and pipe
system as data for 3D visualization of the distribution of wax deposits in pipes using
MATLAB software.
