english study program of universitas riau students' perceptions of using chatgpt in improving their writing skills.
This study investigated the first-year English Study Program students’
perceptions of using ChatGPT in improving their writing skills at Universitas Riau. A
quantitative descriptive design involved 39 students from Class 2A with prior ChatGPT
experience. Data were collected using a 30-item Likert-scale questionnaire covering five
indicators: idea development, organization and structure, language use and vocabulary,
confidence and motivation, and ethical awareness and critical thinking. Findings show
overall positive perceptions, with the highest mean in ethical awareness and critical
thinking (M = 4.51) and language use and vocabulary (M = 4.18). Students reported that
ChatGPT facilitates idea generation, enriches vocabulary, improves sentence structure, and
boosts writing confidence, while promoting awareness of originality and responsible AI
use. Although some students expressed neutral views on its effect on creativity and logical
structure, perceptions remained positive overall. The results indicate that ChatGPT serves
as a supportive tool for writing improvement, complementing rather than replacing critical
thinking and creativity.
