english students’ difficulties and strategies in comprehending journal articles at fkip universitas riau
The objective of this research was to find out the difficulties and strategies of
second-year English Study Program students at FKIP Universitas Riau in
comprehending journal articles. This research employed a descriptive quantitative
research design and involved 76 students from classes 4B and 4C, selected
through cluster random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire
using a four-point Likert scale, designed to measure two variables: students'
difficulties and strategies in comprehending journal articles. The findings revealed
that students encountered several challenges in reading journal articles, with the
most significant being the inability to use effective reading strategies (M =
2.8158), limited vocabulary (M = 2.7763), and lack of familiarity with the journal
article format (M = 2.7763). Other issues, such as ambiguous words (M = 1.6842),
recalling information (M = 1.6974) and lack of prior knowledge (M = 2.0789),
were less problematic. Regarding strategies, the most frequently used strategy was
the Problem-Solving Strategy (PROB) (M = 3.0022), followed by the Global
Reading Strategy (GLOB) (M = 2.7368) and the Support Strategy (SUP) (M =
2.5842). These findings highlight the importance of improving students' academic
vocabulary acquisition, familiarity with journal structures, and using varied
reading strategies to improve their comprehension of academic texts such as
journal articles.
