students’ perceptions of watching english movies in improving vocabulary knowledge at universitas riau.
This study aims to investigate the perceptions of fourth-semester
students of the English Study Program at Universitas Riau toward watching English
movies as a medium to improve vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary plays an
important role in language proficiency; however, many students experience
difficulties in improving it through traditional classroom methods. To address this
issue, English movies were introduced as an engaging and contextual learning tool.
This research employed a quantitative descriptive design involving seventy-eight
respondents selected through purposive sampling technique. The data were
collected using a questionnaire consisting of twenty statements covering four main
aspects: attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance, and motivation. The results
showed that students had positive perceptions of watching English movies in all
measured aspects, with attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance and motivation
categorized as very high. These findings indicate that watching English movies can
improve students’ vocabulary knowledge, enhance learning motivation, and create
a more enjoyable learning experience. Therefore, English movies can serve as an
effective and entertaining supplementary medium in teaching English vocabulary.
