The ability to read quickly while comprehending the content of the text is an
important part of 21st-century literacy skills. This study aims to describe the effective
reading speed of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Ukui in Pelalawan Regency
and to analyze the differences in effective reading speed between fiction and
nonfiction texts. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with a population
of 86 eighth-grade students and a saturated sampling technique. The research
instruments were fictional texts in the form of short stories and non-fictional texts in
the form of popular scientific articles, as well as comprehension tests in the form of
objective questions. The results showed that the effective reading speed of students on
fiction texts was 119 wpm, categorized as high, and on nonfiction texts was 124 wpm,
categorized as very high. Based on the paired t-test, there was a difference in
effective reading speed between the two types of texts, with non-fiction texts
outperforming fiction texts by an average difference of 5.186. These findings indicate
that students read faster and understand texts that are straightforward and
informative better than fiction texts, whose language and plot require deeper
