an analysis of the second-year students’ reading comprehension in narrative texts at sman 4 pekanbaru
This study investigates the reading comprehension ability of second-year students at SMAN 4 Pekanbaru in understanding narrative texts. The research focuses on five indicators of reading comprehension, namely finding factual information, identifying the main idea, understanding vocabulary meaning, identifying references, and making inferences. A quantitative descriptive design was employed, involving 46 students from class XI.7 as the sample selected through cluster random sampling. The data were collected through a 28-item multiple-choice reading comprehension test and analyzed using percentage techniques. The findings reveal that students’ overall reading comprehension ability is categorized as very good, with an average score of 87.4. The highest achievement was found in understanding vocabulary meaning (97%), while the lowest was in making inferences (86%). These results indicate that students demonstrate strong comprehension skills but still need improvement in higher-order comprehension processes. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to apply instructional strategies that emphasize critical reading and inference-making to enhance students’ comprehension of narrative texts.
