ABSTRACT
Caprolactam is an organic compound with the chemical formula (C6H11NO). At room temperature, caprolactam is a white crystalline solid with a distinctive odor. Caprolactam is categorized as an industrial product because it is used in the textile industry as a raw material for the manufacture of nylon-6, which is the starting material for the manufacture of synthetic fibers. The demand for caprolactam is currently met through imports because caprolactam is not produced domestically. The establishment of a caprolactam factory will reduce the need for imports and increase state revenue. A caprolactam factory will be established in the industrial area of Manyar Sidomukti District, Gresik City, East Java Province in 2027 with a factory capacity of 30,000 tons/year.
The process used in the design of the caprolactam plant is the SNIA-Viscosa process, in which molten benzoic acid, hydrogen, and palladium catalyst are reacted in a hydrogenation reactor at a temperature of 170°C and a pressure of 16 atm to form cyclohexanecarboxylic acid. Cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is then mixed with oleum solvent and reacted with nitrosylsulfuric acid in a nitrosation reactor to form caprolactam at a temperature of 80°C and a pressure of 1 atm. The caprolactam production results in gypsum as a by-product. Factory waste is treated with an activated sludge process to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) levels. The factory equipment is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure process performance, ensure stability, and minimize external disturbances. The factory's electricity needs are met by steam-powered turbines. Water requirements are met by treating river water using coagulation and flocculation principles. The main equipment designed is a caprolactam distillation column that functions to separate caprolactam products with cyclohexane carboxylic acid.
The economic evaluation review forms the basis for the feasibility of investing in the construction of a caprolactam plant. The economic analysis aims to determine the feasibility of investing in the construction of a plant. The economic analysis shows a total capital investment (TCI) requirement of IDR 4.07 trillion and total production costs (TPC) of IDR 625.5 billion per year, with sales of IDR 1.77 trillion per year. The profitability analysis resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of 21.93%, a payback period (PBP) of 3.0 years, a break-even point (BEP) at a production capacity of 25%, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 30.79%, and a net present value (NPV) of Rp 1.39 trillion at a discount rate of 16%. The profitability analysis shows that the caprolactam plant from benzoic acid is feasible to establish and is an attractive investment.
