Rancangan Pabrik Asam Asetat Dari Methanol Proses Monsanto Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Karbonilasi Metanol (R-101)
ABSTRACT
Acetic acid is an essential chemical widely used across various industries. It is utilized in the production of polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), cellulose acetate, and polyvinyl acetate, as well as in various types of fibers and textiles. In addition, acetic acid serves as an acidity regulator in the food industry, a raw material in chemical industries such as Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and ethyl acetate production, a pH regulator in the textile industry, and a coagulant in the rubber thread industry. It also functions as an intermediate material in the synthesis of other chemicals such as vinyl acetate, cellulose acetate, acetic anhydride, and chloroacetic acid.
The current production capacity of acetic acid in Indonesia is approximately 36,000 tons per year; however, this amount is insufficient to meet domestic demand, resulting in continued dependence on imports. The increasing import volume of acetic acid indicates significant domestic demand growth. According to data from the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) in 2023, Indonesia’s acetic acid import volume reached 65,084.512 tons per year. To meet this growing demand, the construction of an acetic acid plant is planned in Bontang City, East Kalimantan. The location was chosen due to its proximity to raw material sources, convenient transportation access, and availability of utilities.
The production of acetic acid will employ the Monsanto process, which consists of two main stages, which methanol carbonylation and product separation and purification. The carbonylation process occurs when methanol reacts with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium complex catalyst and methyl iodide promoter, achieving a conversion rate of 90%. The separation stage is carried out in two steps, catalyst separation using a flash separator, followed by the separation of acetic acid from water and unreacted components using a distillation column.
Based on the economic analysis, the Total Capital Investment (TCI) is estimated at Rp725,280,183,244, while the Total Production Cost (TPC) amounts to Rp487.411.289.317 per year. The profitability indicators show a Net Present Value (NPV) of Rp1.1210.392.848.172, a Return on Investment (ROI) of 36.81%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 4.28 years, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18.71%, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 26.05%. These results indicate that the acetic acid plant project is economically feasible, assuming stable raw material and product prices.
