ABSTRACT
Hexene-1 is a linear, unbranched isomer of hexene with the chemical formula C6H12. Hexene-1 is a clear colorless liquid with a petroleum-like odor, soluble in most organic solvents but insoluble in water. Hexene-1 also provides tear resistance and other desirable properties to polyethylene, thus its main use as a comonomer in the production of High Density PolyEthylene (HDPE) and Linear Low Density PolyEthylene (LLDPE). It can also be used as a solvent, paint thinner, chemical reaction media, and synthesis of flavors, perfumes, dyes and resins. However, 7the needfor Hexene-1in Indonesiaisstillimportingfrom othercountriessuch asEurope, China, and America. Therefore, the establishment of a Hexene-1 plant will reduce the need for imports and increase state revenues. The Hexene-1 plant was established in Mancak District, Serang Regency, Banten in 2028 with a capacity of 25,000 tons/year.
The production ofHexene-1iscarriedoutbythe trimerization process ofethyleneusing chromium (III) 2-ethylhexanoate catalyst assistance and produces the main product Hexene-1 and a by-product in the form of octene-1. The reaction takes place in a bubble reactor under operating conditions of 140oC and 98 atm pressure. Hexene-1 and Octene-1 with chromium (III) 2-ethylhexanoate catalyst are separated using a distillation column. Then, Octene-1 and chromium (III) 2-ethylhexanoate catalyst are separated using a decanter so that the catalyst can be reused. Provision of Hexene-1 plant utility needs in the form of steam supply units, water supply units, and electricity supply units. The equipment in the plant is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure the production process runs well.
The Hexene-1 plant has a fixed capital investment of Rp. 1.288.659.397.888, a working capital investment of Rp. 143.184.377.543 and a total production cost of Rp. 1.357.778.690.098. The products produced are sold with a revenue of Rp. 2.492.017.353.280 per year. Profitability analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of Rp. 503.438.288.888,46 with a discounted internal rate of return (IRR) of 18,36%, break-even point (BEP) at 37,104% production capacity, and payback period (PBP) of 3,82 years. Based on these results, the design of the Hexene-1 plant from ethylene is considered feasible and a good investment.
