Rancangan Pabrik Asam Format Proses Kemira-Leonard Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi Asam Format (T-103)
ABSTRACT
Formic acid is used as a preservative and antibacterial agent in animal feed, as a coagulant in the rubber industry, as a raw material for leather tanning and textile processes, and as a reducing agent in various chemical reactions. The demand for formic acid in Indonesia in 2023 is 3,444,836 tons and is projected to increase by 14,323 tons by 2032. The plant design aims to produce formic acid to reduce domestic imports, increase foreign exchange earnings, and create new job opportunities.
The process used in the production of formic acid is the Kemira-Leonard process, which is the hydrolysis of methyl formate with water to produce formic acid. This process was chosen because it has proven to be reliable and has been widely used commercially in various formic acid-producing industries. The Kemira-Leonard process has advantages in terms of high purity of the formic acid product, simple reaction, the highest gross profit margin among other processes, and ease of obtaining raw materials.
The factory's location is planned for Bontang,, East Kalimantan. With a planned production capacity of 14,000 tons/year, the establishment of the formic acid plant is expected to meet domestic formic acid needs and increase formic acid export activities. The water used for utilities and processes is sourced from Guntung Lake, which is close to the factory location. The total utility water requirement for the formic acid plant is 22051,52 kg/hour, and the electricity requirement is
188.186 kW/hour. Utility water is processed using the principles of coagulation and flocculation, while the factory's liquid waste is treated using a biological method, specifically with the help of microorganisms that are useful for addressing liquid waste issues in the industrial environment.
The results of the economic analysis show a total capital investment (TCI) of Rp 521,313,209,744.57, a total production cost (TPC) of Rp 179,173,025,989.96, and a working capital investment (WCI) of Rp 52,131,320,974.46. Revenue from the sale of formic acid products is Rp 316,937,520,934 per year. From the profitability analysis, the net present value (NPV) was found to be Rp896,604,877,559.50, the internal rate of return (IRR) was 25.42%, the break-even point (BEP) occurred at a production capacity of 50.47%, the payback period was 3 years and 2 months, and the return on investment (ROI) was 23.46%. The results of the profitability analysis indicate that the formic acid plant is feasible to establish and is a profitable investment..
