This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of active debate learning
method in improving students' historical understanding on the topic of European
colonialism and imperialism in Indonesia. Preliminary observations at SMKN 4
Pekanbaru revealed that conventional methods resulted in uneven student
participation, with some students dominating discussions while others were less
engaged. This quasi-experimental study involved 80 eleventh-grade students
divided into an experimental group (40 students) using active debate method and a
control group (40 students) using conventional method. Data were collected
through validated pre-test and post-test and analyzed using t-test. The results
showed a significant increase in the average score of the experimental group
(from 54.45 to 82.43) compared to the control group (from 51.27 to 75.83). The ttest
