ABSTRACT
Dimethyl ether (DME) is a simple ether compound used as a raw material in industry and as a fuel. DME is a colorless gas with an ether-like odor that is soluble in both water and oil. It is non-carcinogenic, non-teratogenic, non-mutagenic, and non-toxic, demonstrating its environmental friendliness because its combustion does not produce sulfur oxides (SOx) or smoke, and produces very low levels of NOx, CO, and particulates. DME is obtained from methanol, methanol is obtained from synthesis gas, while synthesis gas is obtained from natural gas.
The production of dimethyl ether requires methanol as a raw material. Methanol is produced from synthetic gas (CO and H2) as a raw material. Synthetic gas requires raw materials in the form of natural gas components and water vapor, which produce synthetic gas (CO and H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as a by-product. Natural gas will react with water vapor with the help of a nickel aluminum oxide catalyst in a multitube fixed bed reactor at a temperature of 800 oC and a pressure of 30 atm with a reaction conversion of 93%. The natural gas in the form of synthesis gas will be further processed to produce DME with the help of bifunctional catalyst, namely CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3 in a multitube fixed bed reactor at a temperature of 250 °C and a pressure of 50 atm with a reaction conversion of 95%. The plant's utility facilities cover various important needs, including electricity supply units, steam supply units, and water supply units. Waste generated from production will be treated in a waste treatment unit. The production process at this plant will be controlled using process control instruments and safety instruments to ensure that the production process runs smoothly.
The dimethyl ether factory has a fixed capital investment of IDR 1,619,923,211,864, a working capital investment of IDR 323,984,644,373, and a total production cost of IDR 1,269,447,131,651. The products are sold with an annual revenue of IDR 1,882,160,548,589. Profitability analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of IDR 2,843,489,025,845 with adiscount in the form of an internal rate of return (investor rate of return/IRR) of 23.45%, a break-even point (BEP) at a production capacity of 43.60%, and a payback period (PBP) of 5.4 years. Based on these results,the design of a dimethyl ether plant from natural gas is considered feasible anda profitable investment.
