Rancangan Pabrik N-Butiraldehid Dari Butadiena Proses BASF Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Oktanal (R-101)
ABSTRACT
Butyraldehyde is a colorless liquid chemical with the chemical formula C4H8O. n-Butyraldehyde is a primary aldehyde compound that has many applications in various industrial sectors. n-Butyraldehyde is widely used as a raw material for the production of Poly Vinyl Butyral (PVB), butyric acid and butyric anhydride, textiles and perfumes, as well as solvents. The demand for n-butyraldehyde in Indonesia is predicted to experience significant growth throughout the year. However, there is currently no factory in Indonesia that produces n-butyraldehyde, so it needs to be imported to meet the needs of the industry. The establishment of an n-butyraldehyde factory is oriented towards meeting domestic needs, thereby reducing import value and increasing state revenue. he n-butyraldehyde factory from 1,3-butadiene with the BASF process is planned to be built in Cilegon, Banten in 2028 with a capacity of 48,000 tons/year.
The production of n-butyraldehyde is carried out using the BASF process with the help of an ion exchanger catalyst, producing octanal as an intermediate product. The reaction takes place in a plug flow reactor (PFR) at an operating temperature of 150°C and a pressure of 25 bar with a reaction conversion of 72.4%. Then, octanal is reacted with water to produce n-butyraldehyde as the main product and n-butanol as a byproduct. The reaction takes place in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) at an operating temperature of 150°C and a pressure of 25 bar. The mixture of n-butyraldehyde and n-butanol is then separated using a distillation column to produce n-butyraldehyde with a purity of 99%. The utility needs of the n-butyraldehyde factory include a steam provider unit, a water provider unit, and an electricity provider unit. The equipment in the factory is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure that the production process runs smoothly.
The n-butyraldehyde factory has a fixed capital investment of IDR 1,083,118,739,844,60 working capital investment of IDR 270,779,684,961, and a total capital investment of IDR 1,353,898,424,805, with a total production cost of IDR 590,887,185,696. The profitability analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of IDR 1,641,070,731,078 with a discount rate in the form of an internal rate of return (IRR) of 21.17%, a break-even point (BEP) at 50% production capacity, and a payback period (PBP) of 2.9 years. Based on these results, the design of the n-butyraldehyde factory from 1,3-butadiene with the BASF process is considered feasible and a profitable investment.
