Rancangan Pabrik Kaprolaktam Dari Asam Benzoat Proses SNIA-Viscosa Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Hydrogenation (R-201)
ABSTRACT
Caprolactam is an organic compound with the chemical formula (C6H11NO). At room conditions, caprolactam is a crystalline solid, white in color, and has a distinctive odor. Caprolactam is categorized into industrial products, because it is used in the textile industry as an ingredient in the manufacture of nylon-6, which is the starting material for making synthetic fibers. The need for caprolactam is currently met by imports because caprolactam is not produced domestically. The establishment of a caprolactam plant will reduce the need for imports and increase state revenues. The caprolactam plant was established in the industrial area of Manyar Sidomukti District, Gresik City, East Java Province in 2025 with a plant capacity of 30,000 tons/year.
The process used in the design of the caprolactam plant is the SNIA-Viscosa process, in which molten benzoic acid, hydrogen, and a palladium catalyst are reacted in a hydrogenation reactor at 170°C and 16 atm pressure to form cyclohexane carboxylic acid. The cyclohexane carboxylic acid is then mixed with oleum solvent and reacted with nitrosylsulfuric acid in a nitrosizing reactor to form caprolactam at 80°C and 1 atm pressure. The caprolactam produces the by-product gypsum. The plant effluent is treated with an activated sludge process to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) levels. Equipment at the plant is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure process performance, ensure stability, and suppress external disturbances. The plant's electricity needs are met by steam-driven turbines. Water needs are obtained through the occupancy of river water with the principle of coagulation and flocculation. The main equipment design is a hydrogenation reactor that functions to react benzoic acid and form cyclohexane carboxylic acid.
The review of economic evaluation is the basis of the feasibility of investing in the construction of a caprolactam plant. Economic analysis indicates that the total capital investment (TCI) required amounts to IDR 3.05 trillion, while the total production cost (TPC) is estimated at IDR 625.5 billion per year, with annual sales revenue of IDR 1.77 trillion. The profitability analysis yields a return on investment (ROI) of 21.93%, a payback period (PBP) of 3.0 years, a break-even point (BEP) at 25% of production capacity, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 30.79%, and a net present value (NPV) of IDR 1.39 trillion at a discount rate of 16%. These profitability indicators demonstrate that the proposed caprolactam plant from benzoic acid is economically feasible and represents an attractive investment opportunity.
