the effectiveness of using chatgpt-4O to reduce speaking anxiety at smpn 5 pelalawan
This study investigated the effectiveness of ChatGPT-4o in reducing English speaking anxiety among students at SMPN 5 Pelalawan. Using a quantitative one-group pre-experimental pre-test design, the study involved 21 eighth-graders whose English proficiency ranged from beginner to lower intermediate. Data were collected using the standard English Speaking Anxiety Scale (ESAS) adapted for junior high school students and analysed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests via SPSS. The reliability test yielded an Alpha Cronbach value of 0.854, indicating high internal consistency. Descriptive results showed a decrease in average anxiety scores from 4.30 (pre-test) to 3.70 (post-test), suggesting a significant reduction in speech anxiety after the ChatGPT-4o intervention. The paired sample t-test confirmed a statistically significant improvement in two key indicators—anxiety (p = 0.000) and confidence (p = 0.010)—which demonstrated ChatGPT's effectiveness in creating a psychologically supportive environment for English language communication. Although linguistic indicators such as pronunciation, fluency, and grammatical accuracy did not show significant changes, they did show positive trends. Further qualitative classroom observations revealed that students became more confident and actively engaged in talking activities with ChatGPT. Overall, these findings highlight the pedagogical potential of ChatGPT-4o as an AI-assisted tool to lower affective barriers, improve learners' self-efficacy, and foster communicative competence in the context of English learning.
