Adaptasimahasiswa Baru Dalammenghadapi Culture Shock Di Lingkungan Universitas Riau

When individuals go to an area that has never been inhabited or visited before,
they will certainly experience culture shock. Culture shock occurs based on the
differences in reactions between individuals in responding to cultural differences
between their own culture and an area they have never been to before, which will
make individuals feel confused about these differences, especially students who
come from outside the area. This study aims to describe the process of adaptation
to culture shock experienced by students from outside the region and the forms of
adaptation they encounter in overcoming this cultural shock using Kalvero
Oberg's Theory and Robert K. Merton's Theory of Adaptation. The research
method used in this study is qualitative, specifically descriptive qualitative
research. Data collection was conducted using in-depth interviews and
documentation. The technique used in this study was accidental sampling, with
seven informants selected based on predetermined criteria. This study used new
students who came from outside the city of Pekanbaru as informants. The results
of the study show that these new students went through four phases, namely: 1)
the excitement phase, 2) the disappointment phase, 3) the adjustment phase, and
4) the full adaptation phase, indicating that they had fully accepted the culture at
the University of Riau. In dealing with culture shock, they used several forms of
adaptation, including five ways of overcoming cultural shock, namely conformity,
innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion, such as by tolerating cultural
differences in socializing at the destination university.
