ABSTRACT
The increasing use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry has contributed to
environmental pollution, one of which is caused by metilen biru. One method that
can be used to address this issue is adsorption using biomass-based adsorbents.
Nypa palm fronds (Nypa fruticans) have the potential to be utilized as a raw
material for biochar due to their high lignocellulosic content. This study aimed to
synthesize and characterize potassium hydroxide (KOH)-activated biochar derived
from nypa palm fronds, investigate the effects of adsorbent mass and contact time
on metilen biru adsorption, and determine the most suitable adsorption isotherm
model. Biochar was produced through pyrolysis at 400°C followed by chemical
activation using 4 M KOH. Characterization was carried out through moisture
content, ash content, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analyses, while the
adsorption process was conducted using adsorbent masses of 1, 2, 3, and 4 g and
contact times of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 min. The results showed that KOH activation
improved the characteristics of biochar, as indicated by a decrease in moisture
content from 8% to 5% and ash content from 29.6% to 7.84%, as well as changes
in surface functional groups. The highest adsorption capacity was obtained at an
adsorbent mass of 1 g and a contact time of 10 min, reaching 9.23 mg/g, while the
highest removal efficiency was achieved at an adsorbent mass of 4 g and a contact
time of 20 min, reaching 99.88 Isotherm analysis showed that methylene blue
adsorption was better described by the Langmuir isotherm model, with an R² value
of 0.9728, a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 9.78 mg/g, and a Langmuir
constant (KL) of 4.03 L/mg. The results indicate that KOH-activated nipa palm
frond biochar has potential as an adsorbent for methylene blue removal.
