Produksi Furfural Dengan Variasi Perlakuan Asam Dari Tandan Kosong Sawit
Furfural production can be done by using acid treatment to break lignocellulosic bonds in oil palm empty fruit bunches so that the resulting furfural yield is optimal. The purpose of this study was intended to study the use of oil palm empty fruit bunches as raw materials in furfural manufacturing, study the effect of acid pretreatment methods with various acid solvents in lignocellulosic breakdown for furfural production with variations in hydrolysis temperature and acid solvents used, and study about the optimal process of furfural formation from palm empty bunches. There are three stages in this research, namely pretreatment, dehydration, and distillation. Initial treatments using acid solvents with low concentrations include H2SO4 3%, HCl 3%, and HNO3 3%, each processed with cooked at variations at temperatures of 110, 120, 130oC during the reaction time of 1 hour. The results showed that the acid pretreatment process using HCl 3% solvent with a cooked temperature at 130oC was the best process to produce furfural. Hemicellulose from oil palm empty fruit bunches produces pentose and furfural which can be used as industrial raw materials. The highest yield of furfural obtained from pretreatment using HCl 3% with a hydrolysis temperature at 130oC was 7.13% and the lowest furfural yield was obtained from the pretreatment using HNO3 3% with a reaction temperature at 110oC was 6.62%.
