Karakteristik Vegetasi Di Bawah Pohon-Pohon Rehat Kalong Kapauk (Pteropus Vampyrus) Di Pulau Besar, Taman Nasional Zamrud, Provinsi Riau
The giant flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) is a frugivorous mammal capable of flying exploring up to 60 km every day, hence believed to play an important role as seed disperser. This animal roosts in large groups on trees in certain locations. One of known roosting locations is Pulau Besar, which is situated within Zamrud National Park in Riau Province. The feces discharged by this animal may contain various seeds that potentially affect the characteristics of understory vegetation beneath its roosting trees. This study, which was conducted in May 2019, was intended to characterize the understory vegetation beneath such trees and clarify the effects of tree occupation by the flying fox on understory vegetation. This research compared anakan pohon (consisting of seedlings, saplings, and poles) beneath five trees outside Pulau Besar and beneath 15 trees on Pulau Besar, consisting of five unoccupied trees, five sparsely-occupied trees, and five densely-occupied trees. The result of research found a total of 293 seedlings consisting of 39 species and 13 families beneath these trees. However, vegetation beneath the roosting trees was marked by the smaller number of anakan pohon individuals and species, and the more dominant were ferns and pandan. The existence of bats in the trees on Pulau Besar thus has a significant negative influence on the regeneration process of trees, especially beneath the roosting trees.
