Efesiensi Adsorben Biji Salak Sidempuan (Salaccasumatrana) Dengan Aktivator Na2co3terhadap Penurunan Merkuri (Hg) Dalam Air Sungai Batang Toru Provinsi Sumatera Utara
The purpose of this study was to characterize the Sidempuan’s salacca seed activated carbon using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) activator with variations in activator concentration 0; 2.5; 5 and 7.5% by weight ratio of carbon: activator is 1: 10, the quality of activated carbon adsorbent Sidempuan’s salacca seeds was determined based on SNI (06-3730-1995). The best characterization of adsorbent was applied to the adsorpt of mercury in a 100 mg / L pure solution to find out the optimum contact of 1; 6; 11; 16 and 21 hours. The best contact time was again applied to determine the efficiency of reducing mercury levels in the Batang Toru river water. Characterization results showed that salak seeds activated carbon with 5% Na2CO3 had the best results with a moisture content of 3.4%, ash content of 4.2%, absorption of iodine 655.0278 mg/g, absorption of methylene blue 6.612 mg/g and mesoporous surface area is 24.5397 m2/mol and the optimum contact time for adsorption of mercury is 16 hours and the efficiency of reducing mercury levels reaches 64%. From this study it can be concluded that the quality of adsorbents from activated carbon from Sidempuan’s salacca seeds wheren’t fulfill the requirements of SNI 06-3730-1995 but was effectived in the process of mercury adsorption.
