Penurunan Ion Merkuri Dalam Air Sungai Batang Toru Provinsi Sumatera Utara Menggunakan Arang Kulit Salak Sidempuan (Salacca Sumatrana) Teraktivasi Na2co3
Sidempuan salak rind was one of the abundant amounts of waste in the South Tapanuli Regency. Sidempuan salak rinds contain many celluloses so that they can be used optimally as activated charcoal. PT. X is a gold mining company in Batang Toru District, South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province. Activated charcoal from the Sidempuan salak rinds is expected to be able to reduce the concentration of mercury ions in the polluted Batang Toru River. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of the activated Sidempuan salak rinds charcoal in reducing the concentration of mercury ions contained in the Batang Toru River water. Sidempuan salak rinds charcoal was prepared at 600ºC for 1 hour with Na2CO3 2.5%; 5% and 7.5% (w/v) solutions as activators with the best concentration at 7.5% (SNI 06-3730-1995). The concentration mercury ions measured in the middle and downstream of the Batang Toru River were 7,279.0 and 6,825.6 ppb, respectively. After being contacted with the activated salak rinds charcoal for 16 hours, the adsorption efficiency of mercury ions obtained was 54.59% and 54.17%, respectively. The final mercury ion concentrations at each pickup point were 3,279.0 and 3,127.9 ppb. These values have exceeded the limits permitted by Government Regulation Number 82 of 2001 about Management of Water Quality and Water Pollution Control, which is 0.002 mg.L-1. From this study, it can be concluded that the activated charcoal from Sidempuan salak rinds is considered effective in reducing the concentration of mercury ions in the Batang Toru River water.
