ABSTRACT
Competition in the manufacturing industry is currently getting tighter,
requiring each company to have a competitive advantage in order to improve
financial performance.Competitive advantage can be had by creating innovation
through research & development activities. In addition, intellectual capital is also
needed to create innovation that can be a competitive advantage for the company
so that it can improve its financial performance. This research is motivated by the
phenomenon of the decline in the average financial performance of companies in
the industry, while the manufacturing industry is the largest contributor to
national GDP.
This study aims to examine the effect of research & development
investment and intellectual capital on financial performance. The population in
this study are manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange
(BEI) during the 2013-2018 period. The samples selection method used purposive
sampling in order to obtain 17 companies as samples. The data analysis
technique used in this study is multiple linier analysis or Ordinary Least Square
(OLS), while the hypothesis testing uses the t-test to test the effect of the variables
partially and the F-test to test the effect of variables simultaneously with a
significance level of 5%.
The results of statistical test with the F-test show that research &
development investment and intellectual capital have a significant effect
simultaneously on financial performance. Meanwhile, the results of statistical
testing with t-test indicate that research & development investment has a positive
and significant effect on financial performance. However, intellectual capital has
no significant effect on financial performance.
