Dental caries is a disease on the hard tissue of the teeth that
characterized by a process of demineralization. High salivary glucose in Diabetes
Mellitus (DM) will increase the incidence of caries. Dental caries occurs due to
many factors, one of them is microorganisms. The most of common
microorganisms that cause dental karies are Streptococcus mutans (S. Mutans).
Objective: This study aims to find out the presence of S. mutans bacteria in dental
caries in DM sufferer at Arifin Achmad Regional Public Hospital, Riau Province.
Methods: This study used a prospective descriptive design with consecutive
sampling, the samples were taken from dental tissue then cultured and the
bacteria identified in the microbiology laboratory and S. mutans identified in the
biomolecular laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Riau University, then the
data was processed and displayed in the form of a frequency distribution table
and expressed as a percentage. Results: The characteristics of DM sufferers with
the most caries were 56-65 years old (56.66%) and 46-55 years old (26.66%),
female (56.67%) and male (43.33). %), the housewives (IRT) (40%) and
