ABSTRACT
The background of this research is based on the amount of waste of oil palm
empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) in Riau Province which has the potential to be used
as composite reinforcement. The problem in the previous research was the weak
interfacial bond resulting in low mechanical properties. To increase the
interfacial bond between the oil palm empty fruit bunch fiber and the matrix,
several attempts were made in this study, namely by performing alkali treatment
by adding temperature and boiling time. In the matrix itself, silane coupling agent
will be added to strengthen the bond between the fiber and the matrix. This
research begins by making an experimental design using the response surface
method. The experimental design was made as a guide in making composites
based on predetermined variables. After that, it was continued with the
manufacture of composite material samples for tensile tests, impact tests, and
water absorption tests. From the test results, the highest tensile strength of 21.859
MPa was produced by composite specimens treated with an alkaline temperature
of 70°C, boiling time of 3 hours and the addition of a 2.5% silane coupling agent
to the matrix. The highest impact resistance of 215.96 J/m was produced by
composite specimens treated with an alkaline temperature of 70°C, boiling time of
3 hours and the addition of a 1.5% silane coupling agent to the matrix. Finally,
the lowest water absorption (1.4%) was produced by composite specimens treated
with an alkaline temperature of 55°C, a boiling time of 2 hours and the addition
of a silane coupling agent to the matrix by 2%.
