Sintesis Karbon Aktif Dari Batubara Anthracite Dan Aplikasinya Pada Absorpsi Zat Warna
ABSTRACT
A direct Brown dye is an organic compound that is derived from benzene. A
direct brown dye is used in industry as a dye for clothes, paper, plastic, or leather
production. Direct Brown dye has one sulfonic group. The molecular formula of
Direct Brown dye is C31H22N8Na2O6S with a molecular weight is 774 g/mol. This
research aims to determine the effect of carbonization and coal particle size on the
characterization of activated carbon from anthracite coal. And then evaluation of
the direct brown dye absorption ability of active carbon from anthracite coal. The
research starts from the carbonization process of anthracite coal. Anthracite coal
first was mashed and filtered with 100 and 140 mesh sieve. The temperatures of
the carbonization process in the furnace were 300, 400, and 500 C for 1 hour.
Carbon from the carbonization process was activated with HCl 1 M for 16 hours
and then neutralized with NaOH 0.5 M. The yield of activated carbon was
calculated and then go to the characterization process. The characterization
process consists of moisture content, volatile matter, carbon fixed and ash content,
and also the ability to absorb the direct brown dye. From the characterization, the
process was obtained a yield of anthracite coal is 97.352-98.965%. The moisture
content is 2.868-3.643%. The volatile matter is 3.930-12.989%. The fixed carbon
and ash content is 83.90-92.85%. All of the characterization results are
appropriate with SNI 06-3730-1995. The ability of activated carbon to absorb the
Direct Brown dye was checked in spectrophotometer UV-Vis the absorption
ability of activated carbon is 47.168-59.041%.
