A Study on the Ability of the Second-Year Students of SMPN 25 Pekanbaru in Writing Personal Recount Text
Abstract: This study seeks to explore the writing ability of second-year junior high school students in writing personal recount text, focusing on five key aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Applying a descriptive quantitative design, this present study involved scoring student texts using analytic rubrics referring to the aforementioned components. The findings reveal that students demonstrated generally satisfactory writing performance, with notable strengths in organization and mechanics. A considerable number of students achieved good to average scores, particularly in vocabulary use. However, grammar and content emerged as the most challenging aspects, with many students scoring in the fair to poor range. The results highlight a significant variation in individual writing performance, indicating the need for differentiated instruction and targeted pedagogical interventions. It is recommended that grammar instruction be integrated into meaningful writing contexts and that content development be supported through structured pre-writing activities. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the specific areas of strength and difficulty in student writing, offering practical implications for EFL writing instruction and further studies in writing skill particularly at the junior high school level.
