In Japan, there is a social phenomenon of disconnected human relationships, known in Japanese as muen shakai. The term muen shakai was popularized in 2010 by the television station NHK (NHK Online, 2013). Nakajima (as cited in Ningsih, 2015:1) defines muen as the absence of ties or relationships, and shakai as society. Thus, the literal meaning of muen shakai is a society without relationships.
This study aims to explain how muen shakai is represented in the film Kodokushi directed by Ensar Altay. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data sourced from the 2020 film Kodokushi by Ensar Altay, collected through screenshot documentation. The analysis process involves selecting scenes from the film and interpreting them using Peirce’s semiotic theory, specifically his triadic model of signs, focusing on the classification of objects into index, icon, and symbol.
The results of the study reveal representations of muen shakai, such as the severing of ketsuen. Ketsuen refers to familial social relationships, so the severing of ketsuen implies the breakdown of social ties between an individual and their family. In this study, the severing of ketsuen is depicted in the form of families separating due to marital conflicts, children growing up and choosing to live apart from their parents due to marriage, and the death of a spouse.
Another form of muen shakai represented is the severing of chien, which refers to the breakdown of social relationships with neighbors. This is portrayed through minimal or nonexistent social interaction between the film’s characters and their surrounding neighbors.
The final form of muen shakai is the breakdown of social ties in the workplace, known as the severing of shaen. However, the researcher did not find any depiction of severed shaen relationships in the film Kodokushi, which was used as the primary data source for this study.
