pola komunikasi guru dalam membentuk kemandirian siswa tunagrahita di slb insan mutiara sidomulyo timur marpoyan damai
This study aims to explore and describe the communication patterns used by
teachers in fostering the independence of students with intellectual disabilities (mentally
retarded students) at SLB Insan Mutiara Sidomulyo Timur Marpoyan Damai. The
background of this study is based on the essential role of communication in educational
processes, particularly for students with special needs who have cognitive and social
adaptation challenges. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with data
collection techniques including interviews, observations, and documentation. The
informants consisted of the school principal, teachers, and parents. The results showed
that the teachers applied four types of communication patterns: (1) primary
communication, consisting of verbal and nonverbal cues such as speech, gestures, and
facial expressions; (2) secondary communication, involving the use of general media
such as pictures and videos, as well as electronic media; (3) linear communication,
where teachers deliver messages either individually or in groups in a one-way flow; and
(4) circular communication, a two-way communication involving feedback from students
to assess message reception. The implementation of these communication patterns
effectively supports students’ independence in daily activities. Through appropriate and
adaptive communication, the learning environment becomes more inclusive and
responsive to students' unique needs. This research contributes to the development of
effective communication strategies for teachers in special education and inclusive
schools. Keywords: Communication patterns, independence, intellectual disability,
