Tingkat Kesejahteraan Beruang Madu (Helarctos Malayanus) Di Taman Satwa Pematang Siantar Sumatera Utara
ABSTRACK
The sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is one of Indonesia's endangered
mammals, whose conservation status is protected both nationally and globally. This
study evaluates ex-situ conservation efforts at Pematang Siantar Zoo to assess the
welfare of sun bears based on animal welfare principles. Research methods included
observation, focal animal sampling, interviews with visitors and management based
on Directorate General of PHKA No. P6/IV-SET/2011, and a study of literature.
The results of the study show that the welfare level of sun bears at Pematang Siantar
Zoo is rated as Good with a score of 78.3. The aspect with the highest score is
freedom from pain, injury, and disease (score 4.23). Meanwhile, the aspect with the
lowest score was freedom from hunger and thirst (score of 3.49), which was due to
the unavailability of water containers in several sun bear enclosures and the
unavailability of freezers/refrigerators and feed storage, which then affected the
assessment. Overall, the sun bears at Pematang Siantar Zoo are considered to be
well-cared for. However, the management needs to pay continuous attention to
improving the fulfillment of animal welfare principles and ensuring the long-term
quality of life for the sun bears at Pematang Siantar Zoo.
